Hot Cold exposure therapy does more than just aiding recovery from training. Contrast therapy sessions can press the neurological reset button. Very similar to taking a 15 minute deep REM nana nap. You tap into the endocrine system get hormones moving and stimulate cellular receptors for temperature regulation that are generally neglected (hich results in you better handling hot and cold environments). It also positively impacts sleep and stimulates mitochondria speeding up metabolism. There is also a shunting effect that stimulates blood flow and lymphatic function as the body switches betweenvaso-dialating (moving fluid to the extremities) in the heat in order to keep the body cool and then vaso-constricting to pull fluids away from the extremities in order to prevent the bodys core temperature from dropping.
When performed at correctly post exercise combining hot and cold exposures enhances recovery and resets the autonomic nervous system, can also enhance training adaptation and down regulate stress hormones.
Breath work is an essential part of the experience in both preparation for cold immersion and during the immersion itself. When first exposed to extreme cold you can go into shock as the body kicks into a sympathetic response to counter the percieved threat brought on by sudden cold exposure. Use of appropriate breathing techiniques enables you to stay calm and in control of your autonomic responses. The experience is a great all round mind / body awareness and control practice.
